This year, the RI Board and the TRF Trustees have approved the new vision statement. That
is, “Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting
change—across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.”
Here, the words “creating lasting change” is what our President Riseley is talking about when
he mentions his theme that we in Rotary should be “Making A Difference” in what we do for
our communities and the world.
Ladies and gentlemen,
we are here at this conference to share and to be edified by ideas and visions to lead us
toward attaining our highest potential. Every spark of inspiration, every flame we light here will
help shine on the path to the realization of our Rotary’s mission in this world.
President Ian emphasizes that our mission be guided by three strategic priorities: that is (1)
to support and strengthen our clubs; (2) to focus and increase our humanitarian service; and (3)
to enhance Rotary’s public image and awareness.
In addition, polio eradication has been Rotary’s top priority since 1985, and the incidence of
polio has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent: from about 350,000 cases a year in 1988
to just 37 confirmed in 2016, and 6 confirmed now year-to-date 2018 in March in only one
country Afghanistan. Until we achieve 100% eradication, eliminating polio will continue to be
our ongoing priority.
In addition to strategic priorities, President Ian also emphasizes the use of many online tools
designed for effective club management. They are designed to support and strengthenclub
operations. The examples of the tools are Rotary.org website, the simplified Rotary
Foundation Grant Process, the improved My Rotary, and highly effective Rotary Club
Central which is much faster, easier to use, mobile-friendly, and an essential tool for every
club. In addition, there is Rotary Showcase to share stories of their clubs’ successful projects
with people around the world. So I strongly encourage you to use these online tools for your
successful club operations. To achieve our second strategic priorities, we must continue to
focus and increase our humanitarianservice in all Six Areas of Focus: (namely peace and
conflict management, education, disease control, clean water, mother and child, and the
development of local economy.
Our third priority, namely enhancing public image and awareness, has to do with Rotary
promotion and actively recruiting new Rotarian members through effective communication as
to who we are and what we do in Rotary.
In addition to these 3 priorities, Ian believes our diversity is our strength. In Rotary, the leaders
come from different sectors of our community and our objective is to put our heads together
to identify and solve critical problems in our communities. This is where diversity plays a key
role in creating right solutions for the communities. Therefore, the notion of job classification
within clubs is still important to leverage our strength. Another important aspect of diversity is
attracting young people into Rotary.
th
Rotary has created Rotaract in March of 1968 and we are facing 50 anniversary since
its foundation. We have over 10,000 rotaract clubs in the world, accounted for 250,000
Rotaracters. However, only 5% of Rotaracters join Rotary as they graduate out of Rotaract
clubs. This means we have to recruit Rotaracters early on to make them members of satellite
clubs of sponsoring Rotary clubs. It is vital that we attract young people into Rotary. We should
bring in their energy and new vision if we were to improve our diversity in our existing clubs.
We should put extra effort to attract young people and letting them participate in club service
projects and club meetings.
In addition to diversity, Ian has been stressing peace and environmental sustainability.
