For Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution, Ian and I appreciate what your district has
already done. As you know, Conflict and violence displace millions of people each year. Half
of those killed in conflicts are children, and 90 percent are civilians. Through our service
projects, peace fellowships, and scholarships, we are taking actions to address the underlying
causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and
unequal distribution of resources. Ian also has held several World Peace Conferences in Rotary
at key international locations to promote our vision for world peace.
For environmental sustainability, Ian has asked every Rotary club to plant at least one tree
for each member by Earth Day, 22 April 2018. Your district 3522 has already actively
participated in tree planting effort. Your district has already implemented 11 projects locally
and internationally and Ian and I are really proud of you all.
Before I close my comments, I also strongly recommend for many of you in this room to attend
our global festival, 2018 Rotary International Toronto Convention. In Toronto, you will see
with your own eyes as to what Rotary is all about and have the opportunities to meet many
great and inspiring fellow Rotarian leaders from all over the world. It is the event you will not
want to miss. It will be the time not only to revive your Rotarian spirit, but also to have the
            sightseeing opportunities.
Let me now make few important remarks before my closing:

Rotary is all about connecting leaders, exchanging ideas, and taking actions to make a
difference in our communities and the world. This means we have to continue to focus
on attracting many new community leaders from all different professional areas so that
we can work with a critical mess of people who can change the world. 1.2 million people
among 70billion people in the world is only 0.019% of the total population. It is hardly
enough number of people to make the real difference. So we have to continue our best for
            membership increase.
There are few things that will not change in Rotary. They are the Object of Rotary and the
Four-Way-Test principles. In addition we also have 5 core values, namely: friendship, dignity,
diversity, service and leadership. These object, principles and values will have to be always
remembered and practiced in our personal and professional lives if we were to be true
Rotarians. And we must strive to set a good example to non-Rotarians so that we Rotarians can
stand out and be trusted. This will be and should be the real strategy for membership increase
and meeting our object of Rotary, thus we can together make a difference in this world.
Now, I must talk about polio eradication....yes, you guessed it! ^^
We are now almost at the end of our journey toward the complete 100% eradication of polio in
this world. We now only have 6 new cases this year only country in Afghanistan. And we have
now launched End POLIO now: Countdown to History campaign to end polio from the surface
of the earth. So my friends, we are at a crossroads in Rotary. We are looking ahead at a year
that may one day be known as the greatest year in Rotary’s history: the year that sees the world’s
last case of polio. We are so close—so much close than we‘ve ever been before. We started
this effort more than 30 years ago. We have stuck with it all this time. By the time the world is
certified polio-free, Rotary’s contribution to the global polio eradication will exceed US $2.2billion,
including over US $985 million in matching funds from the Bill & Malinda Gates Foundation.

Now I would like to end my remarks by quoting what Ian Riseley said,”Each of us choose to
serve, we do it because we know our service makes a difference in the lives of others. Whether
we are building a new playground or a new school, improving medical care or sanitation,
training conflict mediators or midwives we know that the work we do will change people’s lives
–in ways large and small – for the better.”
            Thank you.
